Large Eddy Simulation of Car

Reducing drag and aerodynamically generated noise is a perenial concern for the automotive industry. Accurate noise and drag predictions require the use of scale resolving methods such as large eddy simulations.

For this simulation, a CAD model of a generic sedan was meshed and simulated using Ansys Fluent. The car was simulated at highway speeds. Iso-surfaces of the q-criterion reveal the structure of the flow. Areas of separation in the wheel wells and rear window can be clearly seen.
